Ralph Follett, Jay's somewhat unstable brother, makes the phone call that draws Jay away from his home on the night he is killed, and then has to live with the guilt.

Mary's brother Andrew goes to investigate the accident.

Because Jay was not christened a Catholic, he has been denied the full rites, much to Mary's dismay.

Mary, Rufus, and Aunt Hannah set out for the funeral of Rufus's father, Jay.
